Family Yacht Holidays in the Ionian: Tips and Advice
Families are our most common charter guests. The Ionian is one of the safest and most enjoyable sailing areas for children, thanks to sheltered waters, short distances between islands, and beaches that are shallow enough for wading.
Why the Ionian Works for Families
The sea between the Ionian islands is sheltered by the Greek mainland to the east. Waves are typically small (under 1 metre), even in summer. Children who get car-sick are usually fine on the water here. The distances are short: most sailing legs are 30-90 minutes, so there is never a long stretch where kids have nothing to do.
Safety Onboard
Both our yachts carry life jackets in children's sizes. The skipper will brief your family on safety rules before departure: where to sit while the boat is moving, how to use the swim ladder, and the rule about always wearing a life jacket when on deck while underway.
The Prestige 38S has guardrails around the deck, a large cockpit area that keeps everyone together, and a swim platform that sits just above water level, making it easy for children to get in and out of the sea.
Best Family Beaches
Agiofili is the top pick for families. The bay is sheltered from wind, the water is shallow for 20-30 metres from shore, and a beach bar serves food and drinks so parents can relax. Meganisi's Fanari beach is another great option: sandy bottom, warm water, and zero waves.
Keeping Kids Entertained
Swimming is the main activity. Add snorkelling (we provide masks in children's sizes), jumping off the swim platform, watching fish from the bow, and helping the skipper steer the boat. Most children do not want to leave at the end of the day.
For older children, the skipper can teach basic sailing concepts: reading the wind, understanding navigation charts, and (on the sailing yacht) helping with the sails.
Practical Tips
Sunscreen. Apply it before boarding and reapply often. Kids burn faster on the water because of the reflection. Rash guards (UV protection shirts) reduce the area you need to cover.
Bring snacks. Swimming makes children hungry. Fruit, crackers, and sandwiches stored in the galley fridge keep energy levels up between stops.
Flexible schedule. With a private charter, you set the pace. If the kids love a beach, stay longer. If they want to move, the skipper can head to the next spot in minutes.
A family yacht charter in the Ionian is the holiday your children will talk about for years. Get in touch to plan yours.
