Porto Katsiki by Yacht: The Ultimate Guide
Porto Katsiki is the beach that put Lefkada on the map. White limestone cliffs, water that shifts from pale green to deep turquoise, and a wide crescent of sand that catches the morning sun. It regularly appears in top-10 lists of European beaches.
Most visitors reach it by car and then descend 300+ steps carved into the cliff. By yacht, you skip the stairs, skip the parking queue, and arrive before the crowds.
Getting There by Yacht
Porto Katsiki sits on Lefkada's southwestern tip, roughly 25 nautical miles from the main marina. On our Jeanneau Prestige 38S, the trip takes about 45 minutes at cruising speed. On the sailing yacht, allow 2-3 hours depending on wind.
The approach is dramatic. As you round Cape Lefkatas (where the ancient poet Sappho legendarily leapt), the cliffs open up and Porto Katsiki reveals itself. The first view from the water is something you remember.
Best Time to Arrive
Before 10am. The beach faces west, so morning light illuminates the cliffs beautifully. The water is calmest in the morning before the afternoon thermal breeze builds. And the tour boats from Nidri and Vasiliki do not start arriving until mid-morning.
Late afternoon (after 4pm) is the second-best window. The day-trippers leave, the light turns golden, and the cliff face glows warm orange. Sunset from the water here is outstanding.
Anchoring and Swimming
The bay has a sandy bottom at 5-8 metres depth, good holding for anchoring. Your skipper will position the boat so you can swim directly to the beach. The distance is usually 50-100 metres, an easy swim.
The water clarity is exceptional. You can see the anchor chain on the seabed from the deck. Bring snorkelling gear: the rock edges along the base of the cliffs are home to colourful fish and sea urchins.
What to Bring
Water shoes are recommended. The beach is mostly sand, but the entry to the water has some pebbles. Snorkelling gear, sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof phone case for photos. Your charter includes towels and cold drinks onboard.
Combining Porto Katsiki with Other Stops
A day charter to Porto Katsiki typically includes two other stops. Egremni and Megali Petra are both on the same stretch of coast, making a natural three-beach itinerary. Alternatively, the skipper can route via Vasiliki for a taverna lunch stop before heading to the beach.
Porto Katsiki by yacht is a different experience from Porto Katsiki by stairs. Book your charter and see the difference for yourself.
