Sailing the Ionian Sea: A Guide for First-Time Visitors
The Ionian Sea sits between western Greece and southern Italy. It is calmer than the Aegean, warmer than the Adriatic, and arguably the most beautiful cruising ground in the Mediterranean. For a first yacht charter, it is hard to beat.
Why the Ionian?
The Ionian Islands form a chain along Greece's western coast: Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. The sea between them is sheltered by the mainland, creating gentler conditions than the open Aegean. Waves are smaller. Currents are weaker. Wind patterns are more predictable.
For first-time charter guests, this means comfort. You can sit on deck with a drink without holding on. Children can move around safely. And the distances between islands are short, usually 1-3 hours of sailing.
Weather and Seasons
Charter season runs from May to October. June and September offer the best balance: warm weather (28-32C), calm seas, and fewer crowds. July and August are hotter and busier, with occasional Meltemi wind events that can bring 20-25 knot gusts.
Water temperature ranges from 22C in June to 27C in August. You will want to swim at every stop.
Why Start from Lefkada?
Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it the easiest Ionian island to reach without a ferry. Fly into Preveza (Aktion Airport) and you are at the marina in 20 minutes. From Lefkada, you can reach world-class beaches, Meganisi island, Scorpios (the Onassis island), Ithaca, and Kefalonia within a day.
What to Expect on the Water
Mornings in the Ionian are typically calm, with light breezes building through the afternoon. Your skipper will plan the route to take advantage of this pattern: cover the longer distances in the morning when the sea is flat, and anchor in sheltered bays for the afternoon when the breeze picks up.
The water colour in the Ionian is something you need to see in person. Descriptions do not do it justice. Pale turquoise in shallow bays, deep sapphire in open water, and every shade of blue and green in between.
Practical Tips for First-Timers
Bring soft-soled shoes. Hard soles mark the deck. Boat shoes or clean trainers work fine.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable. The reflection off the water doubles your UV exposure. Apply every two hours, even on cloudy days.
Sea sickness is rare here. The Ionian's sheltered waters mean most people who get seasick elsewhere are fine here. If you are worried, sit towards the back of the boat and keep your eyes on the horizon.
The Ionian is waiting. Book your first yacht charter and find out why sailors keep coming back.
